CONSERVATION MANAGEMENT
Habitat Rehabilitation
Habitat at the island is highly degraded by factors such as weed invasion and as previously stated the associated fauna is dominated by introduced pest species. There is considerable potential for rehabilitation of wildlife habitat at the island. and the following measures are recommended:
- implement weed control measures as outlined in the Herring Island Management Plan (DCE 1991) as a matter of priority
- continue revegetation of areas to be left with a 'bushland' character in accordance with the revegetation plan outlined in the Herring Island Management Plan (DCE 1991)
- encourage natural regeneration of Red Gums around the island perimeter
Proposed Stage 1 Development
The proposed Stage 1 Development is predominantly confined to the areas of silt mounding inside the levee bank, and so can be implemented without significant direct impact on habitat for native wildlife. Adequate measures to minimise impact on environmental attributes should be undertaken including
- care to minimise vegetation removal
- care to minimise damage to existing trees
- no removal of mature red gums
- clear demarcation of construction areas
- control of machinery movements and fill-dumping activities on site
