Herring Island Summer Arts Festival acknowledges the Wurrunjeri people as the original custodians of the land on which the festival is being held. Each Weekend from 13th January to 15th April 2007 This
year the Herring Island Summer Arts Festival will be
a partnership between Parks
Victoria, Friends of Herring Island
and the, now five groups showing their work. Access to this island in
the Yarra is from Como landing near Williams Road, Toorak.
Parks
Victoria's punt service will operate throughout the Summer Arts

The Herring Island Gallery is the converted scout hall. The fireplace and the marks on the floor are the give-away signs – the architecture is now inspired by the place – a gift to the arts by the Myer Foundation and the genius of architect, Greg Burgess. Details contact Janet 0418 546 554 Australia Day Friday 26th January Australia Day 2007 hosted a continuous program of arts events: During the day artists worked in the courtyard in ceramics, sculpture and painting. People of all ages stopped to chat with us as we worked - a relaxed time in a great place. At 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm there were tours of Herring Island and the permanent collection run by Friends of Herring Island. Intending participants met in front of the gallery before the tour. We had perfect weather - breaking our reputation as rainmakers - and lots of visitors enjoyed the day and the art. [CVinc] will wrap up the 2007 Herring Island Summer Arts Festival with their exhibition “Land & Water”. Andrea Barker, international ceramic artist and educator, will curate and open the exhibition. Land & Water: will be open 12pm to 5pm each Saturday and Sunday, March 31st through April 15th, including Easter Saturday and Sunday.; opening 12-2pm on 31 March the exhibition closes each day just before 5 pm - in time for the last punt service of the day to leave the island.
Ceramic artists with an
interest in landscape and environment respond via the medium of clay to themes
including climate change and water shortage.
Each weekend artists will be in the gallery, able
to discuss their work, ideas and processes with

weekends and on Australia Day from midday to 5pm from the Como Landing (Melway Map 2M C2).
The service will only be running during the festival - 13th January to 15th April - this Summer. Como landing is at the foot of Williams Road South Yarra / Toorak where it runs into Alexandra Avenue. Once there - you can't miss the island - banners sponsored by Hocking Stuart (South Yarra) mark the pontoon landings on the Como side of Herring Island. The banner that was on the Burnley landing now graces the side of the cruise ship "Florence on the Yarra". Florence travels from Southbank and cruises to Herring Island - stopping at the Burnley landing at 1:15 pm (a good time to arrive) and 3:15 pm ( in time for the return journey). Kanteen café is located close to the landing. The Herring Island Summer Arts Festival is run with the support of Parks Victoria.
